2009 — Campfire Cookout Rally May 12-15 at Audubon State Park
<
The Southern Indiana Unit had a Campfire Cookout Rally May 12-15 at Audubon State Park in Henderson, Kentucky.
Eight trailers attended the rally: Billy and Beverly Miller, Junior and June Miller, Bill and Barbara Schrader, Don and Marlene Swigart, John and Carrier Hays, Kenneth and Phyllis Lowe, Mike Miller and Region 5 First Vice President Louise Humble and Jerry.
Four drive-ins also attended Rally activities: Morris and Shirley Clodfelter, Dick and Janet Berry, Jack Haines and Larry and Linda Abrams.
Audubon State Park was an excellent location for a Rally with a nice campground, good shelter house and most genial hostess. The park is named after naturalist John James Audubon who spent eight years in Henderson. The Audubon Museum at the park had an impressive display of Audubon’s memorable bird paintings.
As the name implied the Rally included plenty of eating and gatherings around the campfire. The weather cooperated for the most part except for a thunderstorm at 4 a.m. Thursday morning that triggered the tornado siren and sent people scurrying to the rest rooms for cover. Thankfully, no tornado or wind damage.
The business meeting was Wednesday afternoon.
The main item of business was selecting the flag bearer and the Unit’s official delegate to the International Rally in Madison, Wisconsin in June. President Billy Miller will be unable to attend.
Bill Schrader was nominated and elected to be the Southern Indiana Unit representative at the Delegate’s meeting and to carry the flag at the opening and closing ceremonies. An alternate delegate will be selected at a later date.
Schrader went over the amendments and officer nominees to get direction from the Unit members as how he should vote.
Amendment No. 1 is a Vision and Mission Statement for WBCCI. The Unit members voted yes.
Amendment No. 2 would allow an Affiliate Member of a Unit, who is a member of a Unit in the same region, to serve as a Unit’s representative at the Delegate meeting at the International Rally. The Unit members voted yes.
Amendment No. 3 would establish the dates of the International Rally as the last full week of the month of June, that starts on Saturday and ends on Sunday. Presently the International Rally starts on June 26 and ends on July 4. The Unit members voted yes for the change.
The only contested races in the election were for the nominating committee with three candidates for two positions. The candidates are R. B. Bernd, present Region 10 president; Don McKelvey, present Region 2 president; and Leo Garvey, a member of the Metro New York Unit. The vote was 5 for Bernd, 5 for McKelvey and 2 for Garvey.
John and Carrier Hays, who will be hosting the summer rally at Oden City Park in Oden, Indiana Aug. 13-15, invited everyone to attend.
Thursday was a special day with a trek to the truck stop at nearby Robards, home of the Millers, and a delightful lunch. Afternoon offered an opportunity to tour Henderson with its interesting downtown along the Ohio River. The Depot Museum told the history of the community that produced four Kentucky governors, Father of the Blues W.C. Handy and Rear Admiral Husband Kimmel, who was commander and chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet when Pearl Harbor was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941.
